czy szkoła edukuje?

Czy naprawdę potrzebujemy szkoły? Nie mam na myśli edukacji, ale właśnie obowiązkową szkołę: sześć lekcji dziennie, przez pięć dni w tygodniu, przez dziewięć miesięcy w roku, w ciągu dwunastu lat. Czy ta martwa rutyna rzeczywiście jest konieczna? A jeśli tak, to w jakim celu? Nie chowajmy się jednak za nauką czytania, pisania i liczenia jako uzasadnieniem, po-nieważ dwa miliony szczęśliwych dzieci, które uczą się wyłącznie w domu [Autor mówi o formie edukacji jaką jest w USA „homeschooling" - „edukacja domowa" - przyp. tł.], w oczywisty sposób obracają ten argument wniwecz. Nawet gdyby tego nie czyniły, to znacząca liczba dobrze znanych Amerykanów nigdy nie przeszła przez tę dwunastoletnią wyżymaczkę, przez którą nasze dzieci obecnie przechodzą, i „wyszła na ludzi”. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln? Ktoś ich nauczał, bez wątpienia, lecz nie byli oni produktem szkolnego systemu i ani jeden spośród nich nie został absolwen-tem szkoły średniej. Przez większość amerykańskiej historii dzieci zasadniczo nie chodziły do szkoły średniej i ci „niedokształceńcy” wyrastali na admirałów, takich jak Farragut; wynalaz-ców, jak Edison; ojców przemysłu, jak Carnegie i Rockefeller; pisarzy, jak Mellville, Twain czy Conrad; a nawet na uniwersyteckich profesorów, jak Margaret Mead.

Kiedy już raz zrozumiesz logikę skrytą za nowoczesną oświa-tą, jej sztuczki i pułapki będą łatwe do uniknięcia. Szkoła kształci dzieci do bycia pracowni-kami i konsumentami; ucz je więc na własną rękę bycia liderami i poszukiwaczami przygód. Szkoła uczy dzieci bycia odruchowo posłusznymi; sam nauczaj je zatem krytycznego i nieza-leżnego myślenia. Dobrze „wyszkolone” dzieci mają niski próg dla nudy; pomóż im więc rozwijać ich życie wewnętrzne , tak by już nigdy się nie nudziły. Zmuszaj je do brania na sie-bie poważnego materiału, dorosłego materiału z historii, literatury, filozofii, muzyki, sztuki, ekonomii, teologii – wszystkiego tego, czego nauczyciele świadomie unikają. Stawiaj swoim dzieciom wyzwania, zostawiając je z nimi na długie okresy samotności, tak by były zdolne do radowania się własnym towarzystwem, do prowadzenia wewnętrznych dialogów. Dobrze „wyszkoleni” ludzie są uwarunkowani do lęku przed byciem samotnymi i szukają ciągłego towarzystwa poprzez telewizję, komputer, telefon komórkowy oraz przez płytkie znajomości, szybko nawiązywane i równie szybko porzucane. Wasze dzieci powinny mieć bardziej zna-czące życie i są do tego zdolne.

at the evening we have 15 F (-9 C),

and at night it will be 7 F (-14 C).

That makes 54 F (30 C) degrees difference in 24 h !!!

St. Nicholas party

St. Nicolas day is big in Poland, and in Europe. In Poland kids are usually waiting for St. Nicholas (święty Mikołaj) on the evening of Dec 5th. There is always an anticipation, if he will bring a gift or rózga (a bunch of sticks to beat your little behind if you were notty).

To have more fun, we invited some kids to share this special day. We’ve had Australians, Poles, Dutch among us, not mentioning out of state people, so it was truly an international event.

I have made a little puppet of St. Nicholas (bought $1 Santa Claus puppet at Dollar General, cut one part of the hat off, sewed to make a shape of tiara) to tell the stories about St. Nick. There was cookie decorating, food,  gift exchange.

Thanksgiving

This year we had a special treat for the Thanksgiving dinner: Ballassi family and our friend Andrzej from Poland. I cooked mostly typical American food (roasted turkey, Smashed potatoes – as Kevin says, sweet potatoes-pecans casserole, pumpkin soup, green beens casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, salad), but I added Polish bigos. Balassis brought chocolate pies and pumpkin bread.

Advent evenings

The History and meaning of Advent wreath

We have a tradition in our family, to celebrate Advent, as a time of expectation and hope. Each year we prepare Advent wreath, this year it is just 4 candles and greens and pine cones from our yard.

Every evening we light the candle (one candle for each week), read a Scripture for that day (this year we follow Jesse tree outline), sing Advent songs (like O, come, o come Emmanuel) or learn new Polish or English Christmas carols, read daily portion from an Advent story book (this year it is “Bartholomew’s Passage“) and make Jesse tree ornaments.

A Jesse Tree is a depiction of the genealogy of Jesus designed in such a way as to show that He springs from the “root of Jesse”  per the prophecy of Isa 11:1:

And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse [David's father], and a flower shall rise up out of his root.

Basically, it is a daily Advent activity, where following certain Scriptures, you make ornaments and put them on a Jesse or Christmas tree.

We did this two years ago in a form of a booklet. This year I give the kids freedom to choose what kind of Jesse tree ornaments they would do.
